EPAT – Shockwave Therapy

EPAT® Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles Tendonitis is a proven alternative to surgical intervention.  At Indy Podiatry, one of our primary goals is to help people return to an active lifestyle as quickly as possible.  Unfortunately, some foot and ankle problems can take longer time periods to recover from.

EPAT® has a proven record in resolving plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. It is an evidence based approach to treat both acute and chronic cases of plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis as well as other soft tissue conditions. EPAT® is a great alternative to surgical intervention for those patients who have failed to respond to traditional treatment approaches.

A Safe and Advanced Treatment with Proven Positive Outcomes

EPAT Shockwave Therapy for Plantar Fasciitis and Achilles TendonitisFor patients who suffer from difficult to cure cases of soft tissue problems such as plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis, our office can provide an advanced treatment with proven positive outcomes. EPAT®, often referred to as shockwave therapy, has been shown to be effective in resolving both acute and chronic cases of plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. Studies show success rates of 75% and higher.

A recent article in the highly respected American Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that shock wave therapy is a very effective treatment for lower extremity soft tissue problems. It also concluded that this treatment is more effective than traditional therapy for achilles tendonitis.

EPAT® – Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment

EPAT® stands for Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Treatment. This technology stimulates your body’s natural healing response and increases the concentration of growth and healing factors at the site of the soft tissue problem. In essence, EPAT® initiates a new injury at the site being treated, thus triggering a new, stronger healing response.

EPAT® is performed in the office. Although there may be some discomfort during the treatment, EPAT® does not require anesthesia. Treatment usually consists of three treatments done at one week intervals. There are no additional activity restrictions during the treatment period. In the case of plantar fasciitis, treatments such as stretching, massage and use of custom orthotic devices are continued. With achilles tendinitis, it is important to continue an eccentric strengthening program.

Improvement from EPAT® is sometimes noted after just one session, but the greatest amount of improvement is usually seen between the fourth and twelfth weeks after treatment is initiated. In some cases, definite improvement occurs without resolution and two to three additional treatments are performed.

EPAT® is usually performed when traditional treatment regimens have failed to resolve soft tissue injuries such as plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. For those interested is doing everything possible to eliminate these problems as quickly as possible, EPAT ®can be performed at any point in the treatment process.
