How to keep your feet in tip-top shape during & after a pedicure

pedicure safetySandal season is upon us, which means it’s a popular time for pedicures. Unhygienic and unsanitary practices at nail salons are common ways to contract fungal infections. To keep your toes looking great, but also feeling great, we have compiled some important reminders when visiting the nail salon.

1. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) if you can schedule your appointment first thing in the morning, that is the best time because the footbaths and instruments are at their cleanest.

2. Bring your own pedicure tools or ensure that the metal tools they are using are sterilized between each client. Look for the blue Barbicide liquid next time you are in the salon and confirm that any non-metal tools are only used on you, and not other clients.

3. Ask to forgo the use of bubbles in the footbath. The jets that produce the bubbles can harbor bacteria that are hard to clean.

4. Communicate with your pedicurist how you would like your toenails cut. Toenails should be cut across. If you suffer from ingrown toenails, you should see your podiatrist.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the salon’s disinfecting procedures. Ask about how footbaths, tools and any other hygienic-related items are cleaned.  Note that footbaths and tools should be drained and washed/disinfected between customers and nightly.

6. Keep an eye on your feet for the next few days and weeks following your pedicure. If you notice any changes in your feet, specifically red blisters, pimples or swollen bumps, yellowing of nails or an itchy rash, please contact us immediately at 317-573-4250.
